About the artwork

Painted and finely incised mark making defines Ornate from the first glance, with narrow dark lines cut across an earthy surface and packed into a radial pattern. The subject reads as a flower-like mandala, built from leaf shaped petals, small dotted rings, and a starburst center. It sits squarely in the middle of the round format. Every form pushes outward in even bands, so the image feels held in place despite the amount of detail. The technique relies on repetition and symmetry, but the hand remains visible in slight shifts of line width and the roughened surface around each contour, which keeps the pattern from turning mechanical. Some passages look etched into paint, while others read like drawn grooves over a matte ground. And the palette stays restrained, moving between olive green, blackened teal, muted gold, and brown. That limited range makes the dense pattern easier to read, and it gives the circular field a solid, object like weight against the plain background. The strongest fact is the centered rosette locked inside a full round disc of layered petals.
