About the artwork

Large, stocky bunting. On breeding males, the combination of a black head, a bright yellow collar, yellow underparts, and rusty-brown back is unmistakable. The black on the face of nonbreeding males is restricted to the patch around the eyes forming a “bandit’s mask.” Females and juveniles are plain brown overall with a pale yellowish wash on the vent and traces of yellow on the rump. Nearly indistinguishable from the comparable plumages in Red-headed Bunting. Breeds in open forests, edges, and patchily planted areas like orchards and gardens.

Shuvadip Som

For most of my professional life, I have worked in the world of technology, helping shape digital platforms and transformation journeys. Photography offers a different perspective—one measured not in deadlines and data, but in patience, light, and observation. Drawn particularly to birds and wild landscapes, I spend time exploring diverse habitats across India and beyond. This collection is a reflection of those journey and the remarkable moments nature reveals to those willing to wait.
