Tiger Pair in the Forest

Deep greens and black shadow push the light into a room in a narrow, concentrated way, so the bright orange coat reads almost like a lit ember against the wall. Best placed where some viewing distance is possible, this image needs space in front of it because the tiger sits squarely in the center and the surrounding blur only resolves when seen from a few steps back. The subject is a tiger moving forward through undergrowth, partly screened by leaves, with its eyes and striped forehead held in the clearest focus. But the palette does most of the pressure work here, since the orange, white, and black markings break through a field of dark green foliage and brown forest floor while the frame stays mostly low in brightness. The technique appears photographic, using selective focus and a tight pool of light to separate the animal from the trees, and the soft blur at the edges keeps branches and ground cover from competing with the face. The surface reads as smooth photographic print.
