About the artwork

Calm settles over this image because the bird is still on a narrow branch, and the background falls into a dark blur. The subject in Sword-bearer is a tiny bird with a very long, needle-like beak, a green throat and chest, and fine pale speckling across its underside. It sits to the left of the frame, facing right, while the branch runs diagonally across the picture and gives the body a stable perch that keeps the unusual beak from feeling exaggerated. The photographic technique uses close focus on the eye, plumage, and branch lichen, but the space behind drops away into soft green and black, so the outline reads cleanly even at a distance. And the palette stays restrained with mossy green, brown, off-white, and near-black, which makes the iridescent patch at the throat stand out more sharply than a brighter field would. The surface reads as a smooth photographic print.

I am a professional wildlife photographer with a passion for documenting the wonders that we share the planet with. I have travelled around the globe, explored various habitats (polar, mountains, savannahs, rainforests, islands, deserts and more), and photographed a wide variety of wildlife ranging from birds to mammals to reptiles to insects to crabs to plants to fungi. I believe that each photograph tells a story. And many of these stories are sadly vanishing from the planet that we call home.
