About the artwork

Large in feel even at modest size, this piece works best where it has room to breathe across a living room wall, a foyer, or a long hallway. The surface looks built up and worked over, with rough dragged passages, cloudy smears, and thick broken edges that catch as pale ridges against the darker ground. Portrait Of Time 1 uses a layered abstract handling to hold several elephant forms at once, and the image stays slightly unstable because the animals seem to emerge from the paint instead of sitting cleanly on top of it. Some figures are clearer than others. Others break into fragments. So the subject feels less like a single scene and more like memory pressed into mud, stone, and dust. This kind of spread-out structure suits a broad wall better than a tight nook, since the eye needs a step back to sort the pale bodies from the brown and charcoal field around them. The palette stays close to ochre, sand, ash, slate blue, and smoky black, with soft cream on the elephants giving the painting its few calm rests amid all the abrasion. But it would be wrong for a small bright room with delicate decor, and it would also fight spaces that need clean edges, light color, or a quiet surface behind glass.
